Dr. Rifat’s philosophy of care

Her story

A different path from the start

Dr. Rifat’s journey in dentistry began in Mumbai in 1997. Soon after graduating she was invited to join a renowned, high-volume practice as Chief Associate, an early recognition of her clinical ability and judgement.

Instead of following a purely commercial path, she made a deliberate choice: she built her own clinic in a lower-middle-income community, far from where she lived, to make high-quality, ethical dentistry available to people who needed it most. Even on minimal margins, the practice grew strong enough to repay her entire bank loan after she moved to the UAE.

Dentistry connected to the whole person

Her mother, a physiotherapist and occupational therapist with international experience, gave her a lifelong respect for whole-person healing. Dr. Rifat has always believed that dentistry is not isolated: it is deeply connected to systemic health, and must be practised that way.

Taking the cases others avoid

From 2002, nearly two decades at Zulekha Hospital, the UAE’s first JCI-accredited private hospital brought a different level of responsibility. She became known for confidently managing medically complex and high-risk patients, including people with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and kidney or liver conditions, working alongside hospital physicians and treating some special-needs patients under general anaesthesia.

Her consultations were never rushed. Patients often said it felt like being cared for by a physician and a surgeon, with the attentiveness of a family member.

Raising the standard

As Head of the Dental Department, she introduced quality measures that encouraged minimally invasive dentistry, and an antibiotic stewardship programme for root canal treatment, among the earliest dental-specific initiatives of its kind in the UAE. As Healthcare Quality Coordinator she co-authored the department’s manual and protocols to Joint Commission International (JCI) standards.

Learning at the highest level

While working full time in a demanding hospital role and raising two young sons, she completed a three-year Master’s in Dental Medicine for the Medically Complex (Geriatric Dentistry) at the University of Southern California, graduating with distinction and a GPA of 3.9. In 2026 she became the sole UAE-based recipient of the IDA-AGeD Fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry.

Today

With 29 years of experience, Dr. Rifat brings together global training, hospital-based clinical depth and a deeply human, holistic approach. Older adults, anxious and fearful patients, and children and adults with special needs come to her because she takes the time to put them at ease, and does only what they truly need. Many families have stayed with her for decades, some across three generations.

Her vision is to become one of the UAE’s most trusted names in holistic oral healthcare for medically complex and vulnerable people. For Dr. Rifat, it has never been about doing more dentistry. It has always been about doing it right.

“I focus on individuals who require a more thoughtful, medically-informed approach to dental care, especially those who’ve been told their case is too complicated or risky. Patients often tell me it feels less like a dental visit and more like a comprehensive health consultation.”

“I work best with patients who value long-term health and are willing to partner in their care, because that’s where the best outcomes happen.”

How she practises

Holistic and minimally invasive: only the treatment that is truly needed, natural teeth saved wherever possible, and mouth health treated as part of whole-body health.

  • Appointments are never rushed. Patients get the time they need.
  • Nothing begins until the patient feels at ease and ready.
  • Every step is explained clearly, before it happens.
  • Only the treatment that is truly needed, with natural teeth saved wherever possible.
  • Families and carers are welcome, and are part of the conversation.

  • COVID-19 frontline field doctor (medical volunteer) at the Hind Humanitarian City isolation facility, Al Warsan, Dubai (May to June 2020)
